Along with Hard Times (1854), Great Expectations (published serially in All Year Round in 1860-61), is the only occasion when a Dickens novel was not illustrated at the time of its first publication. As with Hard Times, the novel was first illustrated in 1862 for the 'Library Edition' by Marcus Stone, the son of Frank Stone who designed illustrations for the Christmas Book, The Haunted Man. The images below, which reproduce Marcus Stone's illustrations, are taken from the 'Biographical Edition' (1902-3) of Dickens's works.
